Hazmat Training FAQ
Find answers to common questions about DOT hazmat training
I already have my hazmat endorsement. Do I still need this?
Yes. The endorsement lets you legally drive the load. It does not satisfy the separate training requirement under 49 CFR 172.704. They are two different things, and an inspector or auditor knows the difference.
Does this fully satisfy the DOT training requirement?
It covers the components the regulation requires: general awareness, function-specific, safety, security awareness, and in-depth security, plus the testing and recordkeeping. The one piece we cannot do for you is training specific to your exact operation and equipment, the regulation requires you add that, and we show you exactly what that means inside the course.
I am an owner-operator with no employees. Am I required to do this?
Yes. As an owner-operator hauling hazmat you are treated as both the employer and the hazmat employee, so the training and recordkeeping requirements both apply to you.
Is online hazmat training accepted, or do I need in-person?
The regulation does not require in-person training. It requires that hazmat employees be trained, tested, and that records be kept. Online training that covers the required components and documents completion satisfies this.
What is included?
19 lessons across 6 modules, just over 3 hours of video, 6 module quizzes, and a 15-question final exam. On passing you get a certificate plus the compliance documents: the fillable 172.704(d) training record, the certify-your-employee guide, the 9 hazard class placard chart, the refusal one-pager, and the placard placement checklist. Lifetime access to all materials.
How long does it take?
Just over 3 hours of video across 19 lessons. We cover what the regulation requires and skip what it does not, so you finish faster than the padded multi-hour courses.
Will I have proof for an inspector or auditor?
Yes. You get a certificate of completion and the fillable training record that meets the 49 CFR 172.704(d) recordkeeping requirements, the documentation an auditor expects to see on file.
How long is the training good for?
Hazmat training must be renewed at least every three years. Your certificate shows your completion date so you always know when you are due.
Can I buy this for my drivers or employees?
Yes. The group registration option lets you enroll your whole team with volume discounts: 20% off for 3 to 5 users, 25% for 6 to 10, and 30% for 11 or more. Every user gets their own course, documentation, and certificate, and you get the records to prove it.
What if someone fails the final exam?
They can retake it. The module quizzes require 80% to pass with unlimited retakes, so anyone can review and try again until they pass. No one gets stuck.
Can I take it on my phone, and start and stop?
Yes. The course works on phone, tablet, or computer, and it saves your progress so you can stop and pick up where you left off.
Does it cover air, rail, or vessel shipping?
No, and on purpose. This is built for over-the-road highway carriers. You are not paying for content you will never use.
What if I am not satisfied? Do you offer refunds?
Yes. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the course is not the right fit, email support@dotinspectioncourse.com within 30 days and we will issue a refund. We stand behind the training.
